Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a day to pay tribute and honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was created by Congress to honor those who died fighting for their country during World War I. Veterans Day falls on November 11th of each year because it is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918.
On Veterans Day, veterans are recognized for the sacrifices made while they were serving in the military. Veterans are thanked for sacrificing so much for our country. Veterans Day USA is an organization that encourages everyone to thank active-duty members, retired military members, and veterans. Veterans Day USA also encourages unity, understanding, and love to help unite the American people.
Veterans Day is an amazing time for everyone to come together as one country united. Veterans Day not only helps those who have served feel appreciated but helps those who do not ever want to be part of a military feel like they can still support our troops as well as their families overseas. Veterans Day also allows civilians to interact with veterans and share memories about their loved ones who were in service during times of war.
Origins of Veterans Day
On November 11, 1919, Woodrow Wilson released a statement to Americans on the first Armistice Day in which he stated what he thought the day meant to them.
On June 4, 1926, the United States Congress passed a resolution asking President Calvin Coolidge to issue yearly proclamations declaring November 11 to be observed with appropriate ceremonies. The following is a summary of the law passed by Congress in May 1938 that established November 11 as a legal holiday: “A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day’ shall be observed in every year.”
On Veterans Day, the city of Baltimore, Maryland, witnessed a military-themed parade in which veterans marched proudly.
In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks of Birmingham, Alabama, had the inspiration to expand Armistice Day to commemorate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Dwight Eisenhower backed the proposal for National Veterans Day after a group led by Weeks appealed to him.
Weeks was the driving force behind America’s first national holiday in Alabama, which began in 1947 and continued until he died in 1985. In 1982, President Reagan presented him with the Presidential Citizenship Medal at the White House as the driving force for recognizing it nationally. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, called Weeks “the Father of Veterans Day.”
On May 26, 1954, Congressman Ed Rees of Emporia, Kansas, introduced H.R. 9479 to Congress to create Veterans Day as a national holiday. President Dwight D. Eisenhower from Kansas signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954, eight and a half years after Weeks’ initial Armistice Day celebration. Veterans Day was observed for the first time on November 11, 1956.
On June 1, 1954, the bill was changed in the Senate and renamed “Veterans Day,” replacing “Armistice.” Since then, it has been known as Veterans Day.
In 1954, the National Veterans Award was established. For his work in proposing legislation to make Veterans Day a federal holiday, Congressman Rees of Kansas received the first National Veterans Award in Birmingham, Alabama.
The holiday was originally intended to be observed on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, however, it has been revised several times.
The United States National Day of Thanksgiving, better known as Thanksgiving in the US, was first celebrated on November 11 in 1789. It was transformed to its modern date on November 26, 1978. While the legal holiday is maintained at November 11, if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, federal government employees and several businesses will take their Veterans Day holiday on the closest “working day.”
In Germany, Veterans Day is a part of Remembrance Day. World War II ended with the surrender of Japan in 1945 followed by the defeat of Germany in May 8, 1945. Remembrance Day is held from all over Europe and other countries to commemorate those who died during World War II. In the United Kingdom, Veterans Day is held on Sunday that follows Remembrance Sunday.
Why Veterans Day is so Special
Veterans day is a special day that we all get to honor those that serve and protect our great nation and remind them that we appreciate everything they do for us every day of the year. There are many different ways to honor and show gratitude for our Veterans and Veterans Day is the perfect time to do so. Veterans Day is a special day that should be celebrated by everyone in America.
Veterans Day is a great way to show our appreciation for all of these brave men and women who sacrifice their freedoms, safety, security, family, friends, and more. Veterans are some of the bravest people on Earth because they put their lives on the line every single day they go to work. If you have ever served in the military or know someone who has then I am sure that you already understand what Veterans mean when they say they don’t necessarily “fight” for freedom but that they fight for each other. Veterans put their lives on the line so we can live as we please and do as we like without having to worry about not coming home at the end of the day or someone trying to take away our freedoms. Veterans Day is a great time for Veterans, active duty military members, retired Veterans, family members of Veterans that have passed on, Americans who are currently serving in the military forces overseas, friends/family/co-workers, and more. to come together and thank Veterans for their service!
I think Veterans Day is very important because it’s a day where America can show how much they respect Veterans for sacrificing everything they love to serve their country with pride and dedication. Also included in this appreciation are Veterans’ families which sacrifice just as much if not more. Although Veterans Day may only come once a year Veterans should be appreciated every day of the year.
Veterans Day is an amazing time for family and friends to get together and celebrate Veterans that have served our great country. Veterans sacrifice so much for us every day that Veterans Day is a time just for them. Veterans need to be celebrated every day because although they may not want all this attention being put on them, it’s necessary to show appreciation for their lifelong services.
On Veterans Day we remember all those who served in World War I and how they dedicated themselves to ending the war. It was originally called Armistice Day, but after World War II ended in 1945, Congress changed it from Armistice Day to Veterans Day 1954 to honor veterans of both WWII and the Korean War. Veterans Day is a time for Americans to come together and give thanks to all Veterans, past and present, for their protection of our freedom.
How To Commemorate Veterans Day
Veterans Day is also a good day for civilians to ask Veterans about their experiences in the military and learn more about what they did. You can also write letters or create art that honors Veterans. It’s not only a day where Veterans are honored but a time when Veterans get to honor each other. Veterans can talk to each other at Veterans Day celebrations and tell each other stories about their time in the military which is special. Veterans are some of the most important people in our country so Veterans Day is a great day to honor them for all they have done. Veterans deserve nothing less than respect because, without Veterans, this country would cease to exist.
Many Americans gather at local cemeteries or memorials to hold Veterans Day parades and ceremonies while others will attend special dinners and dances where Veterans can be honored with food, entertainment, gifts, prayers, personal messages from loved ones, and more. One of my favorite ways to celebrate Veterans Day is by thanking a Veteran personally either by letter/post/email or in person. This year on Veterans Day I am going to thank a Veteran in person.
It’s Veterans Day but not just Veterans Day it’s Veterans and Active Duty Service Members day! We need to celebrate both Veterans and active military members because without one the other wouldn’t exist. On Veterans Day we remember all those who served, did their duty, and dedicated themselves to this country so they can have the freedom that they have today. This is why Veterans Day needs to be spent thanking Veterans for their service!
In conclusion
Veterans are some of the most important people in our nation so we should spend every day thanking them for what they do. I also feel that there should be more events held on Veterans Days to allow families/friends/strangers/etc. to give Veterans some appreciation. Veterans Day is a day for everyone, not just Veterans, so we must come together and celebrate each other. Veterans sacrifice so much for us every day of the year that Veterans Day should be celebrated on Veterans’ families as well because they sacrifice just as much if not more than Veterans for this country.

2019 Donald Trump Veterans Address
On Veterans Day, Donald Trump stated to the Veterans who are in attendance at Arlington National Cemetery that certain Veterans are “ready to declare a new Independence” by exploring “new horizons” and embarking on a great “adventure”.
Trump encouraged Veterans to:
be true to your values and push onward with God’s guidance.
“As long as we have pride in our country, confidence in our future and faith in our God, then America will prevail,”
Donald Trump stated Veterans Day was established to pay respect and gratitude to Veterans who served this nation. Veterans “are the soul of the country.” Veterans Day is not only a day dedicated to Veterans themselves but also their families who they would not be able to accomplish their tasks without.
On Veterans Day, President Donald J. Trump tweeted: “Today we express our deepest gratitude and give thanks to all those Americans who laid down their lives defending peace and freedom throughout the history of our great Nation. WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THEIR SACRIFICE!”
