National Roof Over Your Head Day
National Roof Over Your Head Day is a recognized December global holiday that occurs annually on December 3rd. National Roof Over Your Head Day is a great time to remind people of the importance of adequate shelter. National Roof Over Your Head Day was created by The National League of Cities (NLC) in commemoration of National Housing Week, which takes place during the first full week in October. National Roof Over Your Head Day occurs on National Housing Week’s final day, National Homeownership Month’s final day, National Child Care Awareness Month’s final day, National Adoption Awareness Month’s final day in the US.
National Roof Over Your Head Day is a time to reflect upon our homes and shelter. This day is an opportunity to recognize that safe and decent housing is both a basic need and a fundamental right of every American.
The National League of Cities (NLC) created National Roof Over Your Head Day in order to commemorate National Housing Week. The first full week in October marks the beginning of National Housing Week; during this week of activities sponsored by NHC (National Association for Community Development), National Housing Now (NAN), NLC, and National Race to the Top Fund National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability. National Roof Over Your Head Day occurs on National Housing Week’s final day, National Homeownership Month’s final day, National Child Care Awareness Month’s final day, National Adoption Awareness Month’s final day in the US.
Most Americans take for granted that they have a roof over their heads; however many Americans struggle daily to keep a roof over their heads through housing or homelessness issues. Throughout history, people have always sought shelter from harsh weather conditions and natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and fires. However along with these physical barriers also come social and psychological barriers which prevent stable affordable housing for individuals and families.
National Roof Over Your Head Day is a reminder to reflect upon our own shelter, our own homes, and the potential barriers we may face when attempting to gain safe affordable housing for ourselves or our loved ones.
This year’s National Housing Week theme, “Every Kid Needs a Champion” encourages all people to speak up and outwardly support children and their housing stability so they can be ready to learn upon entering school for the first time. National Housing Week 2022 draws attention to the nearly 1 in 4 children who spend part or all of their childhood in an unstable housing situation. National Roof Over Your Head Day is an opportunity for people to get involved in their community by participating in National Housing Week events, volunteering with local organizations that focus on the prevention of homelessness, or offering assistance to family members, friends, and neighbors who are struggling.
Some may not realize how important their roof is until they are in financial trouble or weather-related emergencies.
This National day is recognized in the United States of America and celebrated with awareness events regarding housing. The National Coalition for the Homeless has chosen November 10th, to be National Roof Over Your Head Day because it is one week after National Homeless Person’s Memorial Day which remembers homeless individuals who have died on the streets.
The National Coalition for the Homeless also suggests this date because it is two days before National Family Homeless Awareness Day, which began after 9-year old Relisha Rudd went missing in 2014. Her family was living in a homeless shelter at the time of her disappearance and National Family Homeless Day encourages all to call attention to those experiencing homelessness across the United States of America. National Roof Over Your Head Day encourages people to invest in National Housing Week initiatives and National Family Homeless Awareness initiatives throughout National Housing Week.
National Housing Now is a National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability project that seeks to provide an online resource designed to support National Housing Week activities. National Housing Now provides informative articles, videos, guides, and webinars to create awareness for National Housing Week events. National Roof Over Your Head Day is a reminder from National Association for Community Development (NACD) that there are many ways we can work together as a nation to meet national housing needs.
Take the time today to spread awareness for this day, National Roof Over Your Head Day! Be sure to contact your local shelter or government agency that focuses on housing to find out how you can get involved. National Housing Week and National Roof Over Your Head Day are great opportunities to create change in your community!
