Caroling can be traced back to ancient times when carols were sung during pagan celebrations that coincided with winter solstice ceremonies. It was believed that wassailing involved Go Carollers singing to trees and asking for fruitful crops in the coming year. Wassailing was a tradition that had its roots in pagan revelry (Feast of Saturnalia) and one of the most important acts consisted of singing songs on the doorsteps of local orchards to ensure protection for them against diseases and pests.
The custom of Go Carolling during Advent didn’t start until the 1800s; Go Caroling was primarily practiced by the children of Christians who were forbidden from taking part in frivolous entertainment like dancing or playing games on Sundays and for a few months before Christmas.
We can also see traces of Go Caroling in the 1600’s with a man named John Christmas. He composed carols for all four seasons of the year and was a Go Caroler himself.

How Can You Participant in Go Caroling Day
Go Caroling is a very democratic event as well, as anyone can Go Caroll with no prior training or permission needed. Go Carolling is a wonderful way to learn about your community and those that live in it. Go Caroling Day is celebrated on December 18th of each year. Go Carolers sing from house to house for a half-hour per stop, starting at the first houses closest to the GoCaroling meeting place and working their way up.
Looking at Google maps of a neighborhood with all GoCaroling Day “stops” pre-loaded into it so Go Carollers know where they need to go, although there is nothing stopping them from making an extra stop or two if someone particularly friendly invites them in!
Every Go Caroler is provided with a portable karaoke machine that has already been loaded onto it which can be carried from house to house. Go Carollers simply find a GoCaroling Day stop on the map, set their GoCaroling karaoke machine to that GoCaroling stop, and make their way there! Go Caroling is incredibly simple and extremely fun!
