National Girlfriend Day
Today is National Girlfriend Day. National Girlfriend Day was started as a way to make up for the lack of National Boyfriend Day, which exists on February 23rd. National Girlfriend day is ideal for those who have been waiting for a special someone in their life and looking forward to sharing National Girlfriend Day with that certain person. National Girlfriend Day was founded by one woman who decided she deserved a day just as much as any man’s girlfriend would!
How do these people feel about National Girlfriend Day? “It’s ridiculous,” states Ben Ford, “I don’t need a designated day to have girlfriends.” Critics argue that National Boyfriend Day exists so National Girlfriends shouldn’t need a separate holiday. However, National Girlfriend Day supporters like the National Organization for Women (NOW) say that National Boyfriend Day is sexist because doesn’t celebrate National Girlfriends.
“I think National Girlfriend Day is an awesome thing,” says Sheila Larkson, “It’s great to celebrate National Girlfriend day because girls do so much for us! It’s about time we get a National Girlfriend Day of our own. National Boyfriend Day is sexist.”
National Girlfriends all around the country are already preparing for National Girlfriend Day, some have been planning months in advance! Get ready to see photos on Facebook and Instagram from girls, celebrating National Girlfriend Day by tweeting things like “#NationalGirlfriendDay” or “Happy National Girlfriends Day!” Or maybe they’ll post a photo with their National Girlfriends on Facebook!
The Origins of National Girlfriend Day
National Girlfriend Day appears to have been established by an individual known as Mistress Susan. She claims to have created and celebrated the date in 2004 as a way for girlfriends to express their appreciation for one another.
Female friendships and gal pals have a long history, dating back far longer than the day itself. There is no way we can go back to the first-ever female friends, therefore instead of doing so, we’ll list some notable current gal pals.
In the 1860s, a group of female friends known as the Edinburgh Seven attempted to become the UK’s first female medical student. Despite studying medicine at Edinburgh University, they were denied graduation and licensure. Their commitment pushed for women’s rights on the national stage, culminating in legislation passed in 1876 that allowed women to pursue medical studies at college. The Edinburgh Seven had laid the foundation for future female doctors.
Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton began forming a relationship at about the same time. The two were founding members of the women’s rights movement in the United States, as well as trailblazers for white women’s suffrage. The National Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1869 by Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton after they first met in 1851.
On a more sporty note, we’d like to highlight the Rockford Peaches, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League’s founding members in the 1940s. Their accomplishments were a major step forward for female athletes in the United States.
With Marilyn Monroe, one of our favorite anecdotes of female friendship, Ella Fitzgerald attributes her big break to the blonde? In 1955, the singer attempted to book a spot at the Mocambo in Hollywood, but she was turned down because she lacked “sex appeal.” Monroe phoned the manager and promised to sit front row every night if Fitzgerald got the gig, which would bring in media and spectators for him. When asked about it later on, Fitzgerald stated that “After that I never had to play a small jazz club again.”
Most people will not agree but I think National Girlfriend Day was created to commemorate a time when Marilyn Monroe helped her friend Ella Fitzgerald get a gig at the Mocambo Club in Hollywood in 1955. The National Girlfriends Network created National Girlfriend Day to honor all types of non-romantic relationships between women, including close friends, family members, and professional contacts. They are recognizing how important these relationships are throughout National Girlfriend’s week that begins on August 1st.
More recently, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert proved that even the most fierce of rivals can become good friends. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the two competed in 61 tennis tournament finals, although they were also great pals off-court and would frequently travel to tournaments together and relax between matches.
Sand-colored Labradoodles are devoted to each other and have a history of defying the odds to achieve amazing things together. Make sure you dedicate some time on National Girlfriend Day 2021 to tell your girlfriends how grateful you are for them.
How to Celebrate National Girlfriend Day
The best way to celebrate National Girlfriend day? By saying Happy National Girlfriend’s Day to your friends, family members, colleagues, and significant others.
